Jessica Reynoso
Jessica Joy Seria Reynoso (born October 7 1997), known professionally as J.Rey Soul, is an African-American-Filipina singer and song-writer best known as a member of the Grammy Award-winning hip hop group The Black Eyed Peas since 2018.
Early Life[edit]
Reynoso was born to a Filipino mother and a black American father who she never met.[1]. She grew up in the Phillipines and became involved in music at an early age, with her family discovering her potential at age five when she broke into "The Greatest Love of All" at home. From an early age, she and would sing to the records of artists such as Whitney Houston, Barbara Streisand, and Aretha Franklin.[2]
Musical Career[edit]
Philippines[edit]
At the age of nine, Reynoso participated in a television program called Pop Star Kids on QTV in the Philippines, but wasn't until 2013 that she gained traction with a larger audience while participating in the first season of La Voz Filipinas.[3] During the show, Black Eyed Peas member Apl De Ap was her coach. He would go on to sign her to BMBX, his Singapore-based artist development and brand marketing company. She eventually moved to Los Angeles to work on her musical career and under his guidance.[4]
United States[edit]
Reynoso's first single, “Just Like You”, was released 5 August 2014 across 15 countries[5]. In 2018, after Fergie's departure from the band, Reynoso joined the Black Eyed Peas and started going by the stage name J.Rey Soul. She was a guest artist on The Black Eyed Peas 2018 project, "Masters of the Sun Vol. 1," as an uncredited artist in the single "Ring the Alarm" and joined their 2019 world tour.[6] On April 10, 2020, "Mamacita" (stylized in all caps) was produced by the Black Eyed Peas, listing J.Rey Soul as the lead artist[7]
