Jessie Fisher Gordon
Jessie Fisher Gordon LL.D. (1872-1951) was a British-Canadian educational pioneer and teacher, who founded Crofton House School, an early school for girls in Vancouver.
Jessie Fisher Gordon was born in Dumfries, and educated at Bradford Girls Grammar School, an innovative and relatively academically demanding girls' school.[1] She was an early student at Newnham College, Cambridge, matriculating in 1892,[2] although at the time women were not accepted as members of Cambridge University, and could not be awarded degrees. Gordon did not register for any specific degree subject ('no tripos', in University terminology). Scholarships were available for Bradford girls to attend the women's colleges of Oxford, Cambridge and London, and Gordon may have received one of these.[3] At the time, many women students attended Newnham College in the hope of a career as a schoolteacher (one of the very few careers open to middle-class women), and Gordon may have been among them.[4]
Gordon, together with her sister Mary Gordon, was founder and Principal of Crofton House School from 1902 to 1937, later becoming Principal Emeritus on the Board of Governors. The name Crofton House was selected in honour of 'Crofton Cottages' in Newnham village, Cambridge, where the Cambridge Training College for Women Teachers (subsequently Hughes Hall) was located.[5]
In recognition of her work for girls' education, Gordon was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of British Columbia.[6][7]
