Jessie Hillel also known by her alter ego JHM, is a singer, songwriter, and producer based in Melbourne, Australia.

She is known for her runner-up placing in Series two of New Zealand's Got Talent and her win at the first ever Fed Live music competition.[1][2] held by Melbourne's iconic Federation square in association with MTV Australia, Mushroom Records, Melbourne Music Week and DITTO Music to promote upcoming artists in Melbourne, Victoria.

Early years[edit]

As a young artist Hillel performed in local shows and contests[3]. She appeared on New Zealand TV2's What Now performing Time to Say Goodbye and on TV1's Find A Star performing O Mio Babbino Caro[4]. She is featured in the album Kids Sing Bob Dylan (UCA music)[5] singing popular Bob Dylan songs such as Mr.Tambourine Man[6]

New Zealand's Got Talent[edit]

Hillel auditioned for New Zealand's Got Talent series 2 at the age of 10. Her rendition of Pie Jesu earned the judges praises with Rachel Hunter commenting "I just think you are ridiculously amazing"[4]

She advanced to the semi-finals and her performance of O Mio Babbino Caro earned her a spot in the grand finals on judges' vote[7]

Hillel performed Schubert's version of Ave Maria in the finals and ultimately placed second through public vote[8]. "You are mesmerizing, you are enchanting, what you do is enduring" said Jason Kerrison of Hillel's performance in the finals[4]

Success at the Got Talent show saw her perform in shows both in New Zealand and overseas. Hillel was invited to Beijing to appear on International Children's Music Festival[9]. Her performance of Memory was broadcast by CCTV-1 on New Years eve 2012[4]. Her performance was featured by various newspapers across Asia[10] [11].

She was a guest artist at TEDx Christchurch and performed Non So Piu and Serenade[12].

Recording[edit]

Hillel's solo album "With Love"[13] was released by Sony Music NZ in 2013[14][9] and is a collection of classical and contemporary songs. "With Love" peaked at #2 on NZ Top 20 album chart[15] and at #3 on NZ Top 40 album chart[16]. One of the singles Pie Jesu also appeared in the NZ Top 20 Singles chart[17].

She moved to Melbourne, Australia to pursue her music aspirations and to take up a scholarship to study music at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS). She along with her college mates formed the soul/ funk band Jakal and in 2019 won the Battle of the Bands at the St. Kilda Music Festival[18]. Hillel was the lead vocalist and composer in the band's self-titled album JAKAL[19].

She was a principal vocalist of Victorian State School Spectacular in 2016 and 2017[20].

JHM[edit]

In 2020, Hillel formed the pop band JHM and with support from Push Records and Creative Victoria released the single Santorini[22]. The song presents a mix of classical vocal techniques, layered harmonies, hip hop rhythms and orchestral flavours[23][24].

In 2021, JHM played at Southside Live, sharing the stage with the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote, Mitch Tambo, Adalita, and Briggs[25][26]

JHM released the song ‘Fever Dream’ in 2023, teaming up with multi-instrumentalist and producer Fractures (Amy Shark, Vance Joy). ‘Fever Dream’ debuted on national radio [27] in Australia and gained rotation across the US and the UK[28]
