Introduction Ji-Moon Suh (Korean: 서지문 [sʌ.dʑi.mun][3]; born on March 28, 1948) is a South Korean writer, interpreter, professor, and scholar in English and Korean literature.[4]


She has devoted her life to introducing Korean literature to the world of Western literature by interpreting and translating various Korean literary works into English.


She has received numerous awards such as PEN award, Korean Literary Award, and Korean Literature Translation Award for her contribution to literature.[5]

Life
Personal Life Ji-Moon Suh was born in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea on March 28, 1948. She attended Kyunggi Girls’ High School.[6]


After she graduated from high school, she attended Ewha Womans University[7] in Seoul, South Korea. She studied English literature and received her bachelor’s degree there.


With her bachelor’s degree, she went to the United States of America. She continued to study English literature. She received her MA in English literature from University of West Georgia and earned her doctorate in English literature at the State University of New York. [8]


Throughout her life, she dedicated herself to English and Korean literature. She worked as a visiting professor at SOAS University of London, where she taught Korean language and literature. From September 1988 to June 1989, [9] she served as a research professor at Harvard-Yenching Institute[10] and Stanford University[11], during which she strived to introduce Korean literature to the Western world."


Since 1978, she has worked as a professor in the department of English Literature at Korea University[12] and currently remains as an honorary professor.

Career In the early stages of her career as a literary scholar,Ji-Moon Suh felt the need to introduce Korean literature to the world, especially the Western world, but she realized that it was hard for Korean literature to be known in the Western world due to language barriers. Therefore, she translated Korean literary works into English and published them in English-speaking countries. [13]


Award History Ji-Moon Suh has received various awards in the field of literature.


In 1984, she received the Korean Literary Award from the Korean Culture and Arts Foundation. This award is given to those who have contributed to the Korean literary field. With her publications on Korean literary works, she was given this award. [14]


In 2000, she won the PEN Literary Award for her translation work for The Golden Phoenix. [15]


In 2014, she won the Korean Literature Translation Award from Literature Translation Institute of Korea, which aims to recognize Korean translators who promote Korea’s literary works and media contents to the world. She won the 12th Korean Literature Translation Award for translating Won-il Kim’s House with a Sunken Courtyard into English.[16][17]

Translation Ji-Moon Suh went on to translate various Korean folk tales and short stories into English.


She began her translation project by collecting short stories which cover experiences during Korea’s major historical periods. Her first translation is an anthology titled The Rainy Spell and Other Korean Stories.


Ji-Moon Suh translated two more collections of short stories titled The Descendants of Cain and The Golden Phoenix: Seven Contemporary Korean Short Stories.

Later, she pursued translation and became the editor of Brother Enemy: Poems of the Korean War (Korean Voices) [19]
