Jiangsu Grand Theater is a theater located at 181 Mengdu Street, Jianye District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, China. The foundation stone was laid in December 2012 and the main construction began in December 2014. It was officially put into operation on August 5, 2017. It covers an area of ​​196,600 square meters and a total construction area of ​​271,400 square meters. It is the largest modern grand theater in China. In June 2018, the Jiangsu Grand Theater was selected as the 2017 Jiangsu Provincial Construction Industry New Technology Application Demonstration Project by the Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of Jiangsu Province. On December 10, 2019, Jiangsu Grand Theater won the Luban Award, the highest award of China's construction engineering in 2018-2019.[1][2][3]

  • In 2001, the construction of the Jiangsu Grand Theater had been conceived long ago. Due to various factors, a consensus could not be reached, so preparations were delayed.[4]
  • In 2004, the local provincial government proposed to review and evaluate the construction of the Jiangsu Grand Theater.
  • In 2010, the Jiangsu Grand Theater project has been approved by the higher-level State Council, and the grand theater is expected to be built on the bank of Nanjing Xuanwu Lake.[5]
  • In October 2012, the Jiangsu Grand Theater was finally located on the west section of the cultural and sports axis of Hexi New Town, Jianye District, Nanjing and west of the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center, and construction related operations began.[6]
  • On December 26, 2012, the Jiangsu Grand Theater held a groundbreaking ceremony for the grand theater project after discussions with relevant parties.[7]
  • In December 2014, the Jiangsu Grand Theater began to be completed.
  • On June 15, 2015, the Jiangsu Grand Theater initially completed the construction of the concert hall, theater hall, variety hall, civil engineering and the main structure with steel.
  • On July 20, 2017, the Jiangsu Grand Theatre held an opening ceremony in Nanjing.
  • On August 5, 2017, the Jiangsu Grand Theater officially began operations.

Construction[edit]

The Jiangsu Grand Theater occupies a floor area of ​​about 196,600 square meters, and a total floor area of ​​271,400 square meters. It includes an opera hall with more than 2,000 seats, a concert hall with more than 1,400 seats, a theater hall with more than 1,000 seats, and a variety of auditoriums with more than 2,500 seats. The 700-seat international report, the 300-seat multi-function hall and art gallery, and auxiliary facilities meet the needs of opera, dance drama, drama, opera, symphony, folk art and large-scale variety performances.[8][9]
