Jie Di

Jie Di (Chinese: 借地; pinyin: JièDì), also known as Jie Lou (Chinese: 借樓; pinyin: JièLóu) or Jie Ke (Chinese: 借殼; pinyin: JièKé), is an Internet terminology that prevails in social media, online information databases, and movie portals in the People's Republic of China. It refers to the behavior of borrowing an entry for posting reviews and opinions of a different entry. Usually the entries are related by the similarities of their title names.

Etymology

Literally, the character Jie ((Chinese: 借; pinyin: Jiè) means to borrow in Chinese. Therefore, Jie Di, Jie Lou, and Jie Ke mean to borrow a land, a building, and a shell, respectively. In this context, the characters Di, Lou, or Ke all metaphorically refer to the commentary fields under the different entries that are borrowed to post opinions or reviews of the censored entry.

Origin

One of the first uses of the term Jie Di happened after the Chinese government removed a 2017 South Korean film, A Taxi Driver, from a Chinese social networking and movie website, Douban.

The removal triggered the users to post their comments on the South Korean movie under the entry of a different 9-minute 2014 Chinese short film, “Midnight of Taxi.”. The only relationship between the Chinese short film and the censored S. Korean movie was the similarity of their title names. Therefore, when posting a comment or review of the S. Korean film under the “borrowed” entry, the commenter usually wrote Jie Di, Jie Lou, or Jie Ke in the very beginning for clarification.

Impact

The scoring, and the comment & review functions on the borrowed entry Midnight of Taxi on Douban have been shut down.
