Jim Dattilo
James Dattilo (known as Jim Dattilo) is a data analyst and an interactive fiction writer who lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a type of Muscular Dystrophy.
Personal Life, Education, and Work[edit]
Dattilo attended La Salle University over a four year period (1990-1994) and studied in Biology and graduated with a BS (Bachelor of Science).[1]. He also studied English Literature. He proceeded to volunteer as a research coordinator at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia from December 1994 - July 1996, where he "Collected data on pediatric patients with specific neurological disorders, extracted information from clinical charts, medical records, operative and pathological reports, and physicians’ notes, assisted in clinical research and manuscript preparation, and coordinated the acquisition of data for NIH studies."[1] He is also a published author in both the Journal of Pediatrics[2] and Journal of Neurosurgery[3]. From July 1996 – January 1998, for one year and seven months, Dattilo was a Data Coordinator[4] at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he submitted data to agencies and managed clinical data, as well as handle inquiries.[1] Since November 1999, he has been a Data Analyst for the University of Pennsylvania[1], working in clinical research[5]. Sometime before this, he worked for the website "About.com" as a guide to "Computer Simulation Games"[5][6]. Additionally, starting in August 2010, he has been a founding member and producer of "Reel 9 Productions"[7], alongside Eric Zrinsky, Nathan Edmondson, and Erin Davis[8]. Soon after becoming a founder, Jim Dattilo and other producers started on a project called The Way to Kevin, which is "An in depth and personal look at the life and experience of local Philadelphia person of interest, Kevin Mines. The film follows Kevin’s exploits for a year and a half and promises to deliver a powerful and touching look into the life of one man struggling to define himself and to rise above the wounds left by an abusive and tumultuous past."[9][10] Reel 9 Productions has also made other productions, including the award-winning Yes, and I Do![11][12] short comedy series. In September 2011, Reel 9 Productions also made a "Zombie Exodus Promo"[13], for his second interactive novel, Zombie Exodus. He currently lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his wife, Vicki, and Cody, his pit bull. He lives with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which, as he says, is "a type of Muscular Dystrophy. It’s similar to ALS in symptoms but not progression."[5]
Interactive Novels and Writing[edit]
Dattilo first started writing interactive fiction in March 2014[1], where he had previous experience in; he had gotten "Special Thanks"[14] in the game Tin Star[15], released on February 21, 2014, and was a beta tester in the interactive novels Creatures Such As We[16] (released December 12, 2014) and Attack of the Clockwork Army[17] (released in November 25, 2015). Dattilo released his first interactive fiction novel, Zombie Exodus, on December 4, 2011[18][19][20][21], with cover art by Aron Brand and artwork by Alexis Devine. Zombie Exodus won the 2011 XYZZY "Special Recognition" award for interactive fiction[22]. The novel had exceptionally good praise, with the average rating between iOS, Android, and PC platforms being 4.5 out of 5[23]. The game's replayability status and its relatable characters are what earn it its high accommodations. A total of five parts were released of Zombie Exodus, with Part 5 ending the game. n September 4, 2015, Dattilo released his second interactive fiction novel, A Wise Use of Time[24][25], with art by Tony Shasteen[26], chapter headings by Paul Wang[27], and copy editing by Joshua Yearsley[28]. A Wise Use of Time is a "thrilling 260,000-word interactive sci-fi novel... Your choices control the story."[25] A Wise Use of Time earned "very positive" review status on Steam[24], with players feeling like their actions mattered, and, again, enjoyed the replayability factor. It was criticized for its short length and some of the endings being disappointing. A Wise Use of Time was not released in parts, unlike Zombie Exodus and Safe Haven. On October 28, 2016, Dattilo released Part 1 of Zombie Exodus:Save Haven[29][30], with copy editing by Brad "J" Warner and art by Noah Patrick Pfarr[31]. Part 2 was released on March 23, 2018, with assistance in writing by Mia (Last name unknown). Zombie Exodus: Safe Haven received very similar praise to the original Zombie Exodus, with an 89% rating on Steam. Part 2 was disappointing to some people because of its short length[29], but it was mostly praised for its real and dynamic characters. Dattilo has written several short stories for Zombie Exodus: Safe Haven on his Patreon (requires subscription to Dattilo's Patreon)[32]. Dattilo has made all three of his interactive novels using ChoiceScript, a free simple programming language[33]
Current Projects[edit]
Dattilo manages several social media, including a Facebook page[34], a Patreon[32], Twitter[35], an exclusive Zombie Exodus page[20], and a Choice of Games forms page[36]. Dattilo is currently working on many projects, including Zombie Exodus: Safe Haven Part 3, coding chapter 9 and 10 of All World Pro Wrestling by David Monster[37][38], a new project for mobile app game developer, FableLabs[39], on their app, Tales, where he is writing a new story, simply dubbed Vampire Fiction[40], writing a Zombie Exodus novel, based in the universe of the same name[41], and working on a new game with Ethan Underhill called Zombie Exodus: Dead Zone[42] in the Zombie Exodus universe, which is set five years after the apocalypse in Oregon.
