Jim Mowrer is a former soldier who worked in The Pentagon and served in Iraq. Mowrer is running for Congress in Iowa's 4th congressional district. He is a member of the Democratic Party.

Personal life and education[edit]

Mowrer was born on a farm near Boone, Iowa.[1] He was raised by his mother after his father died in a farming accident when Mowrer was seven years old,[2] after which Mowrer's family moved to the town of Boone.[3] Mowrer has a degree in political science from American Military University and a master's degree in public policy from George Mason University.[2] Mowrer and his wife, Chelsey, have two children.[2]

Career[edit]

Mowrer joined the Iowa Army National Guard at the age of 17.[4] He served a two-year deployment in Iraq, locating roadside bombs as an intelligence analyst as part of the 133rd Infantry Regiment,[5] the longest serving unit in the War on Terror.[5] He later returned to Iraq for another eight months, serving as a civilian analyst and adviser.[4][2] Mowrer then worked for The Pentagon, serving as special assistant to the Undersecretary of the Army.[4] For his work in the Army Office of Business Transformation, Mowrer was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Award.[2] Mowrer also served as the Army's lead representative to the NDAA-established Council of Governors.[4]

2014 Congressional campaign[edit]

Mowrer is running for Congress in Iowa's 4th congressional district. The seat is currently held by Republican Steve King. Mowrer has criticized King for his public statements, calling King "mean-spirited."[1] Mowrer has also criticized King's interest in the 2016 presidential race.[6] 2012 4th District Democratic nominee Christie Vilsack has endorsed Mowrer.[7] Mowrer is one of numerous Democratic veteran House recruits running in 2014.[8]

Vice President Joe Biden has helped Mowrer's campaign. Mowrer volunteered for Biden's presidential campaign in 2007, eventually becoming Biden's statewide veterans director in Iowa. Mowrer is also good friends with Beau Biden after serving with him at Camp Victory.[9]
