James "Jim" Taliaferro is an American politician and former police officer, who currently represents District C on the City Council of Shreveport, Louisiana.[1]
2022 City Council Election[edit]
On November 8, 2022, Taliaferro was elected to represent District C on the Shreveport City Council with 69 percent of the vote.[2]
2022 Mayoral campaign[edit]
Taliaferro made a second bid for mayor in 2022 but stepped aside to run for City Council after fellow Republican and current Mayor Tom Arceneaux entered the race.[3] Arceneaux went on to become Shreveport's first Republican mayor in over 25 years.[4]
2019 Commission Election[edit]
Taliaferro was elected without opposition to Caddo Parish Commission in 2019 where he served until his swearing-in for City Council on December 31, 2022.[5]
2018 Mayoral campaign[edit]
On November 7, 2022, Taliaferro placed third in the 2018 Shreveport mayoral election with over 20 percent of the vote[6], sending former mayor Mayor Ollie Tyler and future Mayor Adrian Perkins into a runoff election.[7]
2014 City Marshal Election[edit]
On November 4, 2014, Taliaferro placed second in a five-way race for Shreveport City Marshal, sending him into a runoff election with Charlie Caldwell who went on to secure 57 percent of the vote.[8]
Crime Stoppers[edit]
Taliaferro previously worked with Caddo Parish Crime Stoppers, both as Coordinator and Executive Director.[9] In 2012, Taliaferro was honored as the 2012 International Crime Stoppers Coordinator of the Year, besting every chapter across 23 countries.[10] He also served as a member of the Crime Stoppers USA Board of Directors, serving as the Regional Director for Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.
Law enforcement career[edit]
Taliaferro served 32 years in law enforcement, including 25 with the Shreveport Police Department and seven years with the San Diego Police Department. His roles included Patrol, Field Training Officer, Public Information Officer, Academy Trainer, Special Events, Accident Investigation, and DUI Enforcement. He retired at the rank of Sergeant.
Military aervice[edit]
Taliaferro is a decorated veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, having served a combined active and reserve career of 34 years.
He served in five major military campaigns: Vietnam, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Southern Watch, Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He retired from the Air Force in 2012 holding the rank of Master Sergeant (E7), and the position of First Sergeant with the 307th Security Forces Squadron. In 2010, he was selected as the wing’s First Sergeant of the Year and finalist for 10th Air Force's First Sergeant of the Year.
Personal Life[edit]
Taliaferro was born in Shreveport in 1952, the son of a career Airman.[citation needed]
He works as a realtor with Re-Max Diamond Realty in Shreveport.[11] He married his wife Janet in 2002.[citation needed]
Taliaferro volunteers with various non-profits and civic groups includin Rotary, Air Force Association, the Caddo/Bossier Domestic Violence Task Force (serving as President for four years). He has also worked with local animal rescue groups, rescuing and fostering dogs and puppies from kill shelters.[citation needed]
