Jim Wirt is an American musician, record producer, and audio engineer best known for his work with Incubus,[1] Fiona Apple,[2] Jack's Mannequin,[3] and Hoobastank.[4]

Wirt is from Springfield, Missouri, and attended Drury University[5] earning Bachelor's degrees in both Music Theory and Music Education. Following graduation, he became a member of power-pop/punk band, Fools Face.[6] In hopes of receiving a record deal by working in studios, Jim and the band moved to California in 1984, but split soon after. Five years later, still in California, Wirt opened 4th Street Recording in Santa Monica.[7]

After working with L.A. Guns,[8] Wirt received a demo of a then-undiscovered band called Incubus. Jim began working with them to develop their sound[9], which eventually landed them a deal with Immortal Records[10] and a spot in the Billboard Top 100.[11]

Through Incubus, Wirt met Hoobastank[12] and produced their breakout self-titled album. After the release, major labels started to notice his work and he was offered a job doing A&R at Elektra Records in 2000.

Jim left Elektra in 2003 and continued producing with piano-based indie band, Something Corporate.[13] Through that project, he became friends with frontman Andrew McMahon[14] and went on to produce his solo project, Jack’s Mannequin.[15]

At this same time, Wirt started working with Live, producing three of their albums: Birds of Pray, Awake: The Best of Live, and Songs From Black Mountain.[16] Following Live, Jim produced The Rocket Summer’s Do You Feel,[17] which debuted at #44 on the Billboard Top 200.[18]

After nearly two decades in LA, Jim moved to Cleveland in 2011 to open his own studio.[19] Later that year, Wirt created Crushtone Studios, where he operates using old-school analog consoles. Since opening Crushtone, Jim has worked with Buffalo Killers[20] and A Skylit Drive[21] while continuing to record Cleveland artists.

In 2018, Jim was nominated for an Emmy[22] for Outstanding Original Title Music for his work on “Somebody Feed Phil” by Lake Street Dive.
