Jismi Johari is a prominent Malaysian humanitarian. He serves as the president of the Malaysian Humanitarian Aid and Relief (MAHAR) organization and is also the chairman of the Ops Ihsan Secretariat. Through his work, he has spearheaded numerous campaigns to provide aid and support to those affected by conflict and disaster.[1][2][3][4]
Career
MAHAR says it was formed in 2016 to mobilise resources and deliver aid “beyond religions [and] ethnicity.”[5] Malaysian media routinely describe Johari as both President of MAHAR and chairman of the Ops Ihsan secretariat.[6][7]
Ops Ihsan missions
On 11 November 2023, Johari said a second Ops Ihsan flight carrying 20 tonnes of donated items had arrived in Egypt, bringing the cumulative total to 40 tonnes at that point; the aid was to be handed to the Egyptian Red Crescent for transit to Gaza via Rafah.[8][9] In April 2024, the Deputy Foreign Minister said Malaysia had by then dispatched over 1,500 tonnes of aid to Gaza through Ops Ihsan and other NGOs.[10]
Views and advocacy
As MAHAR president, Johari has argued for unimpeded humanitarian access and condemned the use of starvation during the Gaza war.[11][12]
Safety, governance and controversy
On 13 April 2024, Ops Ihsan reported that several volunteers loading Malaysian aid were injured in an airstrike in Rafah; Johari said the blast nearly destroyed food parcels from Malaysia.[13] In February 2024, a Foreign Ministry letter instructing Ops Ihsan to exclude three NGO leaders named on the FBI Terrorist Screening Center list was leaked; Johari criticised the leak and said governance would be tightened.[14][15]
