Jo Cameron Brown is a Scottish born actress, voice and dialect coach,[1] "Playing granny Moira Henderson, Jo was one of the original River City [2] cast. Appearing on screen in Einstein and Eddington, Jo is best known in the industry as a voice and dialect coach including Starter for Ten, Brick Lane as well as coaching Sophia Myles and Jamie Bell in the acclaimed Hallam Foe."[3]

Jo is the dialogue writer on the BAFTA nominated animated short film Achilles.[4] [5]

Jo's most recent screen appearance is in BBC's There She Goes as Nana Anne[6] and is resident voice coach on the award-winning Peaky Blinders (2013– ) Netflix series. [7]

Voice and Dialect Coaching[edit]

In the late 1990s, While working with dialect coach Joan Washington at the Royal National Theatre, a fascination with accents, different voices and vocal choices led to profound character discovery and revelation which led her to train at Central School of Speech and Drama graduating with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Voice Studies (P.G.D.V.S.) and an MA Voice & Dialect.

Acting Career[edit]

Theatre[edit]

Graduated from RSAMDA (Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama) now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Jo began her acting career in the 1970s, working in regional repertory theatre companies performing in London venues and National Theatre by the 1980s appearing in Guys and Dolls. [9] Jo was an original cast member of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita. [10] Jo has worked with Ken Campbell, Giles Havergal, John McGrath, and Michael Bogdanov performing at The Glasgow Citizens, Leicester Phoenix, Watford Palace, York Theatre Royal,  Edinburgh's Royal Lyceum Theatre, and 7:84.

Jo worked with Giles Havergal’s on his 1982 revival production of Men Should Weep[11] performing at Glasgow Citizens and Theatre Royal Stratford East.

Equity[edit]

Jo is an elected member of Equity, the UK's entertainment industry's trade union ruling Council of 2018-2020 [13] , elected to the Screen and New Media Committee [14] [15] and has served as chair since 2017. Jo sits on industry working parties and campaigning bodies.

Safety Curtain (formerly... International Performers' Aid Trust - IPAT) [16][edit]

Jo is Co-Chair of the trustees maintaining Safety Curtain (formerly... The International Performers’ Aid Trust), which supports performers in threatening and challenging situations throughout the world.[17]
