Joachim W. O. Engels (* 19 March 1944 in Wiesbaden, Germany; † 10 July 2018 in Kronberg, Germany) was a German chemist.

Life[edit]

Joachim Engels studied chemistry between 1964 and 1968 at the FU Berlin, the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich and the University of Regensburg, where he also completed his doctorate in 1972. After a postdoctoral stay at Stanford University with Eugene van Tamelen, Engels moved to the University of Constance in 1973, where he worked on his habilitation on nucleotide chemistry, which he completed in 1979. His habilitation was followed by another stay in the USA with Marvin H. Caruthers at the University of Colorado. From 1982 onwards, Engels headed a DNA synthesis group at Hoechst AG in Frankfurt.

In 1985 he was appointed to the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, where he held a C4 professorship in bioorganic chemistry from 1993 until his retirement in 2011. In 2012 he was appointed Senior Professor.

Joachim Engels was married and father of three children.

Work[edit]

Engels' main research interest[1] was in nucleotide chemistry, in particular the synthesis of modified oligonucleotides[2], and their analysis[3][4] and possible therapeutic applications[5][6]. Joachim Engels was founder and from 2001 to 2007 speaker of the Collaborative Research Center 579 "RNA-Ligand Interactions" of the German Research Foundation and from 2005 to 2006 president of the International Society of Nucleotides and Nucleic Acids (IS3NA).[7]

He has held several visiting professorships, including Chiba Institute, Japan 1989; Hokkaido University, Japan 1998; Shandong University, China 2004; Cadi Ayyad University, Morocco 2010; and the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa 2012.

In 2013 he was elected President of the Scientific Society at Goethe University and held this position until his death.
