Joan Ilangakoon
Don Joan Abeysiriwardhane Ilangakoon (1728 - 1782) was a native Chieftain in Dutch Ceylon who was appointed as the Maha Mudaliyar (Head Mudaliyar) in the year 1748. He was the son of Mudaliyar Don Simon Wijewardene Ilangakoon and Dona Ana De Saa Wickramanayake Abeykone lama etani.
He was banished from the island in the year 1758 as he was convicted for untrustworthiness and eventually, treason. However, he was brought back after realising the Dutch had made a mistake during their further investigations. It is said that in the year 1766 he had shown much loyalty and assisted the negotiations between the envoys of the Kandyan King and the Dutch authorities and in recognition he was awarded with valuable treasure.[1]
His siblings included Dona Florentina Ilangakon who married Mudaliyar Don Constanian Elapata and Muhandiram Don Matthys Abraham Ilangakon who was the organiser of the four gravets of Matara. He married Lady Susanna de Mehlo and had four children, out of which the eldest, Don Simon Petrus Abeysiriwardene Ilangakon, also became a Maha Mudaliyar. He was married to Lady Dona Florentina De Saa Bandaranaike. Another daughter named Adriana Getrude Ilangakon married Nicholas Dias Abeysinghe Maha Mudaliyar. The other two children were Hetroyda and Gerrit Ilangakon. His second marriage was to Lady Catherina Tennakoon and had three sons and a daughter. The eldest son Don David Jayatillake Ilangakon was also appointed as the Maha Mudaliyar under Van de Graff and Governor Frederick North and was married to Lady Angenita de Saram. The other two sons were Mudaliyar Joan Abeysiriwardhana Ilangakon II who married Johana de Saram and Don Balthazar Ilangakon, Atapattu Mudaliyar. The daughter was Dona Ana Ilangakon who married Mudaliyar Thomas Rodrigo Wijeratne Siriwardhana of Matara. She died soon after giving birth to her only daughter Dona Ana Wijeratne Siriwardhana who later married Mudaliyar Don Philip Ferdinandez Wijeratne Obeysekere of Kataluwa Walawwa whose son Lambertus Obeyesekere was also appointed as the Maha Mudaliyar.[2]
