Joan Scheckel
Joan Scheckel
Joan Scheckel is an American theater actor, film producer, and educator. Over the course of two decades, Scheckel has developed and implemented her comprehensive approach to writing, acting, and directing, called “The Technique.”[1] To date, The Technique™ has been a key part of the development of hundreds of films & episodic series, most notably Transparent, Afternoon Delight, Beginners, Little Miss Sunshine, and Whale Rider.[2]
Teaching Philosophy
One of Scheckel’s guiding beliefs is that modern storytelling has relied too much on conflict, which doesn’t reflect the emotional breadth of the human experience. She argues that today’s films have been too reliant on the conflict-driven hero’s journey, and that this monomyth can lead to a trap of creating predictable and meaningless stories. As a counterpoint to this trend, she developed “The Technique,” which is driven, in part, by the approach that actions are dictated by emotions.[3]
Film, Collaborations and Recognition
Of the 76 films that have been completed through Scheckel’s labs, 74 have been released. They’ve been nominated over 600 times, won over 300 awards, and have collectively earned 1.2 billion dollars.[4]
She was heavily involved in the development of the Amazon Television show Transparent with Joey Soloway.[5]
She currently holds Live Labs teaching The Technique in Los Angeles and various other locations.[6]
