Joanna Bacon Actress[edit]

Joanna Bacon is a British actress[1] born in London, England.

After ballet training with Leo Kersley and Janet Sinclair, and a stint selling Longman English Language Teaching material to the Arab World, Joanna trained at The Actor’s Institute (London and New York), and also took lessons with Uta Hagen at HB Studios.

Joanna’s TV career includes the cult-hit BBC comedy series Him and Her (2010-2013) playing Steve’s Mum Janet Marshall, and Breeders (TV series) in which she plays Jackie Worsley, mother of Paul.

Other recent television work includes Prime Suspect 1973, The Shadow Line (TV series), Cradle to Grave and comedy sketches with “Two Episodes of Mash” on Live at the Electric.

Back in 2003 Joanna appeared as Natalie’s Mum in Universal Pictures’ iconic romantic comedy film Love Actually. More recent film work includes Horrible Histories The Movie: The Rotten Romans (2019) in which she plays Brenda, a kleptomaniac Celt, and A Quiet Passion, Terence Davies’ biopic of Emily Dickinson, in which Joanna plays the poet’s Mother, Emily Norcross Dickinson (Tribeca 10 Best Female Film Performances to June 2017 with Cynthia Nixon).

Joanna has worked extensively in British theatre, including at The National Theatre where she played Aunt Lila in Tennessee Williams’ newly discovered play Spring Storm, and Sarah Atkins in Eugene O’Neill’s Beyond the Horizon. Work for the Royal Shakespeare Company includes David Lan’s adaptation of Euripides’ Ion with Jude Law.

Most recent stage work at the Hampstead Theatre Downstairs in Scarlett, and at the Sheffield Crucible and the Bush Theatre London in Of Kith and Kin. Forthcoming film work includes a cameo in Terence Davies new film about Siegfried Sassoon, Benediction; and Charlotte Colbert’s She Will, both due for release in 2021. Series 2 of Breeders will be available on Sky One in the UK and FX in the USA in 2021.
