Joe A. Hanson
Joseph "Joe" A. Hanson (1928–1985?) was a systems analyst specializing in computation, aerospace research, mariculture, and energy transitions and wrote articles on environmental philosophy. He is best known as one of the inventors of the Ecosphere (aquarium). Along with microbiologist Clair E. Folsome, Hanson was one of several early researchers to demonstrate that materially closed ecosystems could be established to support life at laboratory scales.[1] In this area, Hanson helped establish the field of ecological microcosm research and linked its relevance to larger scaled initiatives with the workshop on closed-system ecology held at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California, USA, in 1982.[2]
Before beginning work at NASA, in 1974, Hanson edited the first major volume on open ocean Mariculture.[3] Under John P. Craven, he managed the Hawaii Floating City Project.[4][5] Hanson was part of the conversations that informed the Biosphere 2 experiment, writing a chapter on “Analytics” for The Biosphere Catalogue (1984).[6]
