Joe Gemma (born November 29, 1957) is an American automation executive and robotics industry leader. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Integrion Automation and has held senior leadership roles across the global industrial robotics and automation sectors. In 2024, Gemma received the Joseph F. Engelberger Robotics Award for Leadership, one of the highest international honors in the robotics industry.
Early life and education
Gemma was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He attended Classical High School, graduating in 1975. He later earned his degree from Rhode Island College in 1997.
Career
Gemma has spent several decades in the industrial automation and robotics industry, holding executive leadership roles in systems integration, robotics manufacturing, and global industry organizations.
Prior to joining Integrion Automation, Gemma served in senior executive positions at major robotics companies, including Stäubli Robotics and KUKA Robotics Corporation in the United States. At KUKA, he served as Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. operations during a period of growth in industrial robotics adoption across North America.[1]
In January 2020, Gemma was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Integrion Automation, a U.S.-based industrial automation systems integrator. In this role, he has overseen organizational restructuring, operational integration, and the expansion of advanced automation and robotics capabilities.[2]
Industry leadership
Beyond his corporate roles, Gemma has held leadership positions in international robotics organizations. Gemma has also served on the board of the Robotics Industries Association (RIA) which is now the Association for Advancing Automation (A3). His involvement included participation in industry committees related to robotics safety, policy advocacy, and workforce development initiatives.[3]In 2015, he was elected President of the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), succeeding Arturo Baroncelli. He previously served as Vice President of the federation for two years. As IFR President, Gemma represented robot manufacturers and national robotics associations globally, focusing on international collaboration and industry coordination.[4]

Gemma has appeared in industry media discussing the evolution of robotics and automation. In a 2025 interview published by the Association for Advancing Automation, he described the progression of robotics from early factory automation to software-driven and AI-enabled systems, and emphasized the role of collaboration between industry, government, and educational institutions in supporting robotics adoption.[5]

In 2024, Gemma received the Joseph F. Engelberger Robotics Award for Leadership, presented by the Association for Advancing Automation (A3).
