Joe Kania is an American marketing professional, entrepreneur, and former sports journalist known for his work in sports media and marketing.[1] He is the founder and chief marketing officer of Kania Media, a marketing agency he launched in 2020, and has held marketing and media roles with organizations including the New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, FloSports, and Spartan Race. Kania is also noted for his work in the wrestling community, including launching the fantasy wrestling platform Fantasy Fight League and developing a collegiate wrestling video game.[2] He is listed among notable people from Westfield, New Jersey.

Early life and education

Kania was born and raised in Westfield, New Jersey.[3] He attended Bergen Catholic High School before transferring to and graduating from Westfield High School, where he participated in football and wrestling.[3] His experiences as a high school athlete, particularly in wrestling, helped instill a sense of resilience and determination that influenced his later career.[3] Kania went on to attend Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania. [1]

Career

Early journalism and wrestling media

While at Bloomsburg and shortly after, Kania began his career in sports journalism. He launched an independent outlet, Garden State Wrestling, to cover New Jersey wrestling before joining mainstream media.[1] In 2012, he became a high school wrestling beat writer for The Star-Ledger (NJ.com), covering the competitive New Jersey prep wrestling scene. His work included in-depth reporting, rankings, and multimedia content such as video interviews.[1] In 2014, the National Wrestling Media Association named Kania the Journalist of the Year for 2013–14 for his work with The Star-Ledger.[1]

NFL media roles

Kania transitioned from journalism to digital media roles in professional sports, joining the New York Giants media and marketing staff, where he contributed to digital content and fan engagement campaigns.[4] In 2015, he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ digital media and marketing department, helping lead social media marketing and content strategy.[5] He was part of the team that launched the “Siege the Day” campaign, a marketing slogan to energize fans, which was cited by Fox Sports. During his time, the Buccaneers were ranked No. 1 in the NFL in fan engagement. [5]

FloSports

Kania later joined FloSports as marketing manager for its wrestling and grappling verticals, FloWrestling and FloGrappling. He oversaw social media growth strategies, marketing campaigns, and community engagement efforts. FloWrestling earned a higher social media engagement rate than Barstool Sports during his tenure.[3]

Entrepreneurship

After leaving FloSports, Kania founded Fantasy Fight League, a fantasy sports platform for wrestling fans.[2] In 2022, he pivoted the project toward developing a collegiate wrestling video game featuring top athletes, a first-of-its-kind venture in wrestling gaming.[2]

Spartan Race

Kania joined Spartan Race in a marketing leadership role, helping build the company’s new Spartan Combat vertical. He also played a role in launching wrestler Kyle Dake’s signature shoe under the Spartan brand.[4]

Kania Media

In 2020, Kania founded Kania Media, a marketing agency where he serves as chief marketing officer. Branded as a “one-man marketing agency,” Kania Media provides outsourced CMO services to clients across sports, tech, and other industries.[4] His client work draws on his experience with major sports brands and startups.
