From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Joseph Clyde "Joe" Meek III is an American elected official and businessman. He is the nonpartisan Mayor of Crystal River, Florida and a former two-term Republican Citrus County Commissioner. Meek joined his family business, Citrus Builder, in 2003, and also started multiple other companies including Meek Development & Investment LLC and Meek Real Estate, all of which he currently owns.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Meek was born on Feb. 13, 1980 in Crystal River. He lived for seven years on the only island in Crystal River's Kings Bay with a house on it - Christmas Island.[2] Meek graduated from Crystal River High School in 1998 and attended with University of South Florida in Tampa with his high school sweetheart, now his wife, Amy. They graduated USF in 2002 and returned to Citrus County in 2003.[2]

Political career[edit]

Meek took office as a Citrus County Commissioner on Nov. 18, 2008 after successfully winning a Republican primary and general election.[3] He was re-elected to the seat in August 2012 with nearly 65% of the vote during a universal primary in which the winner faced no general election opposition.[4]Meek did not seek re-election in 2016 and left the commission after the conclusion of his second term.

During his time as chairman of the county commission, Meek steered Citrus County through an argument over tax revenues with Duke Energy [5] He set forth a plan to alleviate the county's reliance on tax revenue from the utility company. Meek also served as President of the Citrus County Economic Development council, and pushed for a focus on economic diversification.[6]

On April 18, 2018, Meek announced his candidacy for Crystal River Mayor.[7] He won the race on August 10, 2018 when the qualifying period closed having faced no opposition and was officially sworn in on December 3, 2018.[8] As mayor, Meek continued the strategic planning he had begun while chairman of the county commission. He spearheaded a week long planning session, known as a charette, in June 2021 bringing together consultants, government officials and the public to collaboratively decide on the future of the city.
