Joe Nahmad

Joseph Nahmad (born in New York in 1990) is an American art dealer specializing in Contemporary Art. The youngest son of David Nahmad and the brother of Helly Nahmad, (Helly Nahmad Gallery)

At the age of 25, Joe Nahmad was ranked 43rd on the Artnet “100 Most Influential People in the Art World” ^[1] and at 27, he was selected by Forbes for the 2018 “30 under 30” list. ^[2] Joe Nahmad was also described in Cultured Magazine in 2017, as "one of the most avidly watched dealers in New York City". ^[3] ^[4]

Career

in 2013, Joe Nahmad founded Nahmad Contemporary on Madison Avenue, dedicated to the presentation of innovative, and historically focused exhibitions. The gallery specializes in leading Contemporary artists who rose to prominence during the 1980s, and a selection of Modern masters from the 20th century.^[5] The scope of Nahmad Contemporary’s program includes exhibitions that historicize Contemporary artists by highlighting a distinct series, medium, or focus within their body of work. The gallery also features Modern artists in dialogue with Contemporary artists in group shows.

Solo Shows (selection)

In 2013, Nahmad Contemporary opened the gallery with a solo show dedicated to Sterling Ruby: SP Paintings

In 2013 and 2015, the gallery dedicated two shows to Richard Prince: Monochromatic Jokes^[6] and Fashion^[7] ^[8] ^[9] ^[10], bringing together the entirety of the iconic photographic series from 1982-84 for the first time.

In 2015 Nahmad Contemporary presented Joan Miró: Oiseaux dans L’Espace, shedding new light on the complex and profound engagement with American abstract art. ^[11] ^[12] ^[13]

Other major solo shows include Rudolf Stingel: 2000-2003, featuring works from the pivotal Styrofoam and Celotex series.^[14]

in 2016, the exhibition curated by Dieter Buchhart^[15] Words are all We Have: Paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat, centered on the critical function of language in the work of Basquiat, illuminating the artist’s pioneering incorporation of literary and musical elements into his work. ^[16] ^[17] ^[18]

Nahmad Contemporary has presented particular series never shown before such as Daniel Buren’s Paintings from 1965-1966, the foundation of the artist’s iconic stripes. ^[19] ^[20] and Albert Oehlen: Grau series, works created between 1997 and 2008. In 2018, the gallery worked collaboratively with Galerie Perrotin and Simon Lee gallery in London, in a complete survey of Hans Hartung. ^[21] ^[22]

Group Shows (selection)

Poetics of the Gesture: Schiele, Twombly, Basquiat in 2014, is the first exhibition ever to examine the similarities between three of the most influential twentieth century artists of their respective generations. ^[23] ^[24] ^[25] ^[26]

Warhol, Wool, Guyton, featured a selection of late abstract paintings produced between 1978 and 2010, converging formally through ambiguous marks and expressive gestures that summon the language of postwar abstract painting and the innovative print processes. ^[27]

Monochrome: A Dialogue Between Burri, Fontana, Klein, Manzoni, and Stingel, examined the enduring artistic practice of working within the bounds of a single color.^[28]
