Early Life[edit]

Horn had a multinational upbringing, and as a result is quadrilingual. She can speak French and English due to being raised in both Paris and New York City, and learned to speak Hindi due to her being of Indian descent. In her adulthood she learned Norwegian after moving to the country.

In New York City, Horn attended the United Nations International School, a private international school founded to provide an international education while preserving its students’ diverse cultural heritages. She earned an international baccalaureate diploma from the school before moving to Williamstown, Massachusetts to attend Williams College. At the school, Horn studied biology with a concentration in Middle Eastern studies, and graduated from the university as a dean’s list scholar.

After graduating, Horn returned to New York City where she worked as a financial analyst at an investment banking company for two years before enrolling at Yale University to pursue her master’s degree. She earned her MBA with a concentration in finance from the university in 1991.

Career[edit]

After earning her master’s degree, Horn returned to work at the investment banking company she worked for previously, Smith Barney, Harris Upham & Co., this time as an associate. Starting her career within corporate retail, in 1992 she became the director of financial and merchandise planning for Saks Fifth Avenue. In addition to her responsibilities of strategic planning and financial analysis, she collaborated with the company’s consulting firm in planning international expansion and merchandising strategies, most importantly aiding in positioning the company for their successful IPO.

After two years with Saks, Horn left the company to become vice president of mergers and acquisitions at Credit Suisse First Boston, where she specialized in advising large textile, apparel and retail companies on strategic M&A and joint ventures. This also marked the first of many times throughout her career that she worked in a mentoring capacity to the female analysts at the firm, and also aided to direct the focus of the company’s investment banking recruiting team on hiring more women.

Horn moved to Oslo, Norway in 1996, becoming a partner at HQ Norden Securities. Focusing on equity research, Horn continued her work on corporate retail-related transactions, this time within the scope of Scandanavian retailers.

After almost a decade working within the corporate retail world, in 2000 Horn left the large companies she worked for previously to become a self-employed consultant and private investor. Under the name Greylock Management AS, she was able to focus on strategies and branding for smaller retail start-ups, while also working on a variety of financial advisory projects.

Using her previous corporate experience, in 2005 Horn began to serve as an independent director for various corporate boards. From 2007 to 2012, she held the position at companies such as Norse Energy Corp. ASA, Petrojarl ASA, Thoresen Thai Agencies Public Company Ltd. and Asia Offshore Drilling Limited.

After a time living in Singapore, Horn returned to Norway where she became the sector manager of retail and consumer practice at The Boston Consulting Group. After one year at the company, she accepted the position of managing director at Oak Management AS, where she manages a family portfolio of investments mainly in real estate, venture capital and hedge funds.

Personal Life[edit]

Joey is married with three children. She met her husband Ragnar at Williams College while pursuing her undergraduate degree. He is a Norwegian citizen who works at the real estate investment company Taconic AS. Their sons, Nils Alexander and Christian, have both attended their alma mater and their daughter Madeleine intends to do so as well after completing her military service in the Norwegian Armed Forces. The family splits their time between the United States, Norway, and the United Kingdom, and also have homes in Williamstown, Massachusetts and Kvitfjell, Norway.

Horn was an executive producer for the historical drama film Liberté: A Call to Spy. The film is about three female spies working in Churchill’s Secret Army during World War II and is inspired by true stories. It was written, produced and directed by women, and has won an award from the Alliance of Women Film Journalists and earned the Anti-Defamation League Award at the 2020 Santa Barbara International Film Festival with a unanimous vote by the jury. It has also won the Audience Choice Award at the Whistler Film Festival, with a record-setting 97% of the audience voting it as their favorite film.

Philanthropic Endeavors[edit]

Horn has made philanthropy a tenet of her lifestyle, championing organizations that promote education especially for women and children. She has been involved with the charity Mothers2Mothers which trains women living with HIV to be employed as frontline health workers in order to facilitate education on the disease, and sponsors a charity table for Cancer Research UK. Since 2017 she has supported Restore the Music UK, a charity dedicated to bringing awareness to the benefits of musical education by awarding grants to state schools in the greater London area to fund their music programs. Joey chaired the committee for a gala fundraiser in 2019, which raised over £150,000. She is also involved with the charity Right to Play, an international non-profit that believes play can be used to help children overcome the effects of war, poverty and disease. Whether it be empowering girls to resist early marriage and pursue education, provide education to children on how to protect themselves from diseases like HIV and malaria, help child laborers return to school, or inspiring refugee youth living in dire conditions to heal and succeed, the organization brings the power of play to a global scale in fifteen different countries.

While living in Singapore, Horn served as a guest lecturer at Singapore Management University and was also an advisory member of the contemporary arts council for the Asia Society in New York City. For seven years she was on the board of the PTA as treasurer at the Oslo International School, the largest international school in Norway with over 600 students and 100 employees. She was also elected as a trustee at the American University of Paris, and served on the board of trustees for Williams College, her alma mater, for eight years. During that time, she co-founded the Women's Leadership Giving Committee and was also the Alumni Fund co-head agent. In addition to this, she has donated a considerable amount of money to the university, allowing for them to fund projects such as a new dorm and upgrading the campus library.
