Joey Vieira is a Latino American actor who has starred in various film and television roles. Vieira made his breakthrough in Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019) as Diego’s father Nico.[1] He rose to fame with the leading role in the critically acclaimed sci-fi horror short film Decommissioned (2021) directed by Josh Tanner, which went viral and garnered over 119 thousand views online.[2]

As of 2021, Vieira has appeared in 38 film and tv projects. He recently wrapped filming on Chris Hemsworth’s Netflix film Escape from Spiderhead scheduled for a 2021 release.

Early life[edit]

Vieira was born in California to José Vieira and Rosa Vieira. Growing up in a predominantly Mexican community in Central Valley allowed him to appreciate the Latin-American culture and his first languages of Spanish and Portuguese.[3] Vieira was part of the band and choir at Livingston High School. He played baseball, football, ran track and field, did wrestling and was active in student government. It was also during this time that Vieira started ballet, which led to an interest in musical theater and sparked his love for stage and drama.[4] He continued his education at Merced Community College, Modesto JC, Stanislaus State University and completed a BA degree with a major in theatre upon moving to Los Angeles, at California State University of Northridge. He then studied the Meisner Technique at the Joanne Baron D.W. Brown Studio and then audition techniques with Brian Reise.[5]

Vieira started out as a commercial actor in 1995. He made his television debut in 1996 as a rich high school kid in Pacific Blue (1996) alongside actress Maria-Elena Laas.[6] His other early roles include: Strong Medicine (2001), Fastlane (2003), Kitchen Confidential (2005), and The Shield (2007). He notably guest starred in season 25 of The Simpsons (2014) before moving to Australia.

Film[edit]

Upon arriving in Australia, Vieira landed a role in San Andreas (2015) with Dwayne Johnson.[7] He then starred in Jungle (2015) with Daniel Radcliffe followed by a Chinese action comedy called At Last (2019) and then playing the role of Nico in Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019). In 2020, he starred in Romance on the Menu (2020) and Bloody Hell (2020). In 2021, he portrayed Miguel in Escape from Spiderhead (2021) followed by Black Site starring alongside Jason Clarke and Jai Courtney.

He also starred in a number of independent Australian short films such as Confession (2019), How Not To Teach/ (2019) directed by Kenji Lee, Five Moons of Pluto (2020), Decommissioned (2021), and Jeff Horn’s Slugger (2021). In 2019, Vieira starred in Serena (2019) a short film he wrote with co-writer Alexandra MacDonald.

Television[edit]

Vieira has appeared in multiple episodes of Texas Rising: The Lost Soldier (2015), the ABC series Reef Break (2019), and season 2 of How to Stay Married (2020) broadcast by Network 10.

Personal life[edit]

Vieira is married to an Australian woman who he met in 2004. The couple have a son, four dogs, and a cat. He currently lives in Brisbane Australia.
