John Bowers
John Bowers (born 1984) is an American composer, musician, producer, and sound artist based in Los Angeles, California. He is best known as a founding member of the experimental pop band Nurses, and for his work in electronic music, film scoring, sound design, and generative composition.
His work spans music, technology, and narrative. He has composed for independent films and immersive installations and has developed generative musical systems for digital platforms and interactive media.
Early life
Bowers was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho. In interviews Bowers has described early interests in piano, cassette recording, synthesizers, Brian Eno, David Bowie, and experimental recording techniques. He began studying piano and electronic music at an early age. He has cited his father, a musician, as an early influence and has spoken about discovering synthesizers as a child, particularly the Ensoniq ESQ-1, which sparked a lasting fascination with electronic sound.[1]
While in high school, he met musician Aaron Chapman, beginning a creative partnership that would later become the experimental band Nurses.[1]
Career
Nurses
Bowers co-founded Nurses in mid-2000s with Aaron Chapman.[2] The band formed in Idaho before relocating to Portland, Oregon, where they developed a distinctive sound that blended psychedelic pop, electronic music, sampling, collage, and layered vocal harmonies.[1]
Their 2009 album Apple's Acre, released on Dead Oceans,[3] received widespread critical acclaim. Pitchfork praised the album for its "densely layered arrangements and hallucinatory pop sensibility."[4]. Nurses followed with Dracula (2011), which expanded their use of synthesizers, electronic textures, and unconventional recording techniques.[5] The band toured extensively throughout North America and Europe before entering an extended hiatus. In 2017, they released Naughtland.[2]
Throughout the band's career, Bowers served as a songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumental and was central to shaping the group's recorded sound.
Solo work
Alongside his work with Nurses, Bowers has developed an independent practice as a composer and electronic musician. His solo releases explore ambient composition, modular synthesis, minimal structures, and sound design.
His solo albums include Kindness (2021) and Shungite (2023). Conceived as a collection of compositions representing different floors of a fictional megamall, Shungite reflects Bowers' interest in spatial storytelling through music and the relationship between architecture and sound.[6]
Film composition and sound design
Bowers has composed original scores and created sound design for numerous independent films, including several directed by Pete Ohs. Their collaboration includes Jethica (2022), which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival.[7]
Generative Music
Alongside his work as a composer, Bowers has explored generative and interactive approaches to music composition. His work combines electronic instrumentation, software, and algorithmic systems to create musical works that evolve through programmed variation rather than fixed arrangements. In interviews, Bowers has cited the writings and compositions of Brian Eno as a significant influence on his approach to generative music. He composed the generative score for Space Doodles, describing the project as an exploration of continuously evolving musical structures.[8]
