John C. Ackerman

John C. Ackerman (born April 28, 1978) is an American politician who is currently the Tazewell County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds since 2018. A member of the Republican Party, he previously was a Tazewell County Board member from 2008 to 2014 and from 2002 to 2006 and as a IV Ward Alderman for the City of Washington from 1999 to 2002. He formally owned a media relations firm, Ackerman Consulting, and was employed as the Director of Media Relations for the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago from 2015 to 2018.[1]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Ackerman was born and raised in Washington, Illinois. John C. Ackerman earned the Eagle Scout rank on June 26, 1993. Ackerman graduated from Washington Community High School in 1997. Following high school, Ackerman attended Illinois Central College and the University of Illinois at Springfield, majoring in Horticulture and Political Science. While at the University of Illinois at Springfield, Ackerman was selected to participate in Model Illinois Government and received the Donna Lennon Award for Outstanding Member of the House in 2001.

Business Career[edit]

Ackerman worked his way through his senior year of High School and throughout college in the Horticulture Industry for various employers. In 2013, Ackerman organized the successful effort to gain passage in the Illinois House of Representatives of SR70[2], a resolution in support of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, on the behalf of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago. After other successful media relations projects on the behalf of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago, he was hired as the Director of Media Relations in 2015[3] and started Ackerman Consulting, a media relations firm. In that position, Ackerman organized numerous media events and political lobbying efforts in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri. Ackerman organized lobbying efforts in 2016 of the United States Congress to gain official United States Government recognition of genocide of the Christian minority population of Iraq and Syria.[4] Following just three months of organized lobbying efforts, the Obama Administration officially recognized the events as genocide. Ackerman organized the successful efforts to gain passage of SR2 in Indiana on March 22, 2017[5], HR28 in Indiana[6] on February 28, 2018, and SR178 in Minnesota on August 13, 2018, each resolutions in support of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople[7]. As the Director of Media Relations for the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago, John Ackerman was interviewed as part of the documentary "Modern Christian Martyrs" which covered the persecution of Christian minorities in Syria and the Middle East. "Modern Christian Martyrs" was aired on ABC National News throughout the month of April in 2017. [8]

Political Career[edit]

Washington Alderman[edit]

John C. Ackerman challenged incumbent Estell Vaughn for a seat on the Washington City Council in the February 23rd, 1999, Republican Primary Election. Ackerman won the primary election with 57% of the vote and then won the April 13th General Election uncontested, becoming one of the youngest Elected Officials in Illinois.[9]

Tazewell County Recorder of Deeds[edit]

John C. Ackerman was selected as the Republican Candidate for Tazewell County Recorder of Deeds on March 21, 2000[10]. In the November 7, 2000, General Election against long-term Democrat Incumbent Robert Lutz he lost the election 53% for Lutz to 47% for Ackerman.[11]

Tazewell County Board 2002[edit]

John C. Ackerman campaigned for one of seven Tazewell County Board District Three seats in the March 19, 2002, Republican Primary. Against seven Republican incumbents, Ackerman received the highest votes of any candidate with 71% of the votes possible[12]. In the following November 5, 2002, General Election, Ackerman and the six other Republican candidates defeated a Democrat candidate Donald Cremeens. Ackerman became the youngest Tazewell County Board Member.[13]

Tazewell County Board 2008[edit]

Following a two-year absence from the Tazewell County Board, John C. Ackerman campaigned for one of three Tazewell County Board District Three seats in the February 5, 2008, Republican Primary. Against three Republican incumbents, Ackerman received the highest votes of any candidate with 65% of the votes possible.[14] In the following November 4, 2008, General Election, Ackerman and the two other Republican candidates defeated Democrat candidates Michael Chiras and Mark Grin and Constitution Party candidate Charles Broy, with Ackerman receiving the highest votes of any candidate with 57% of the votes possible.[15]

53rd Illinois State Senate 2010[edit]

On November 2, 2010, 53rd Illinois State Senator Dan Rutherford was elected Illinois State Treasurer. That created an opening for Republican County Leadership throughout the 53rd Illinois Senate District to pick his replacement to fulfill the remainder of that term. After weeks of discussions, then Tazewell County Board Member John C. Ackerman was one of six candidates interviewed for the opening by the Republican Leadership on November 20th, 2010.[16]105th Illinois State Representative Shane Cultra was selected for the 53rd Illinois State Senate opening.[17]

Tazewell County Board 2012[edit]

John C. Ackerman campaigned for one of seven Tazewell County Board District Three seats in the March 20, 2012, Republican Primary. As one of eight Republican nominees, Ackerman received the highest votes of any candidate with 63% of the votes possible.[18] In the following November 6, 2012, General Election, Ackerman and the six other Republican candidates won unopposed, with Ackerman receiving the highest votes of any candidate with 65% of the votes possible.[19]

Tazewell County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds 2014[edit]

John C. Ackerman was selected as the Republican Candidate for Tazewell County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds on March 18, 2014. In the November 4, 2014, General Election against long-term Democrat Incumbent Christie Webb he lost the election 55% for Webb to 45% for Ackerman.[20]

Tazewell County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds 2018[edit]

John C. Ackerman campaigned to be the Republican nominee for Tazewell County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds in the March 20, 2018, Primary Election. Ackerman won the Republican Primary against County Board Member Brett Grimm and Tazewell County Auditor Shelly Hranka with 37% for Ackerman, 35% for Grimm, and 28% for Hranka.[21] In the November 6, 2018, General Election against Democrat candidate Brittany Miller, Ackerman won with 58% for Ackerman to 42% for Miller.[22] On November 30, 2018, John C. Ackerman was sworn in by Judge Michael Risinger as the Tazewell County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds. [23]

Personal Life[edit]

John C. Ackerman married Maria Randitsas of Peoria on September 27, 2008. They live in Washington, Illinois, and have two sons and a daughter. John and his family are members of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Peoria, Illinois. Ackerman is a St Louis Cardinals baseball fan and frequent media commenter on politics.
