John Calvin Hill (1828 – January 14, 1899), known as Cad during his lifetime, was a private in the Confederate Army. He served in the 1st Mississippi Cavalry, Company F, starting in 1862 under the command of Colonel Richard Alexander Pinson. [1]
Early life
John Calvin "Cad" Hill was born to William and Mary Patsy Shaw Hill in 1828 in Knox County, Tennessee. He had four older siblings, Daniel Henry, Mary, Samuel Shaw, and Martha Hill, and two younger siblings, James Benjamin and Frances Hill. His farming parents moved from near Johnston County, North Carolina to Knox County and eventually settled in Noxubee County, Mississippi. Cad, like his parents, was a farmer. On December 14, 1856, he married Margaret Brandon, from Greene County, Alabama. They lived in Noxubee County before moving to Pickens County, Alabama. They had two children during this time: John, born in 1858, and Ella, born in 1860. The Hills returned to Noxubee County just as Mississippi began to secede from the Union. [1]
Military service
With the outbreak of the American Civil War and Mississippi's secession, Cad enlisted in the Confederate States Army in Noxubee County in 1862, shortly after the birth of his twin sons, William and James. He enlisted alongside three of his brothers. Cad was assigned to the 1st Mississippi Cavalry, Company F.[1]
