Bilello attended public grade schools in Brooklyn, N.Y., graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School, 1956. He then received a Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering from New York University, 1960, a Master’s degree in Materials Science from New York University, 1962, and finally a Doctor of Philosophy in Materials Science & Physics, from University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana).
Professional Life
Advanced Research Engineering, General Telephone and Electronics, 1965-67; State University of New York at Stony Brook (now Stony Brook University), 1967-1986. He served as Assistant to Full Professor of Materials Science from 1967-1986, and also Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, 1977-1981. Dean of College of Engineering and Computer Science, California State University - Fullerton, 1986-1989.[i] Then Professor of Materials Science and Engineering & Professor of Applied Physics, The University of Michigan, 1989–2004.[1] Vice President for Research & Development, MetaGlass Coating, LLC, from 2004–2014.[ii]
He held visiting appointments at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Physics Department; Euratom Laboratories, Ispra, Italy; CSNEF – Politecnico de Milano, Milan, Italy; London University, Physics Department; Oxford University, Oxford, UK, Department of Engineering; and California Institute of Technology, Materials Science Department, Pasadena, California.
Research Career
He is an expert in the use of high intensity x-ray (synchrotron radiation) diffraction imaging, microdiffraction, grazing angle incidence scattering, and other associated techniques as a tool for non-destructive materials characterization. He studied a wide range of problems in metals, alloys, and semiconductors where it is necessary to control the structure-property relationships to achieve improved performance or to create new materials. He wrote more than 140 papers in technical journals plus chapters in books.[iii]
Honors and Awards
Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society), Alpha Sigma Mu (Metallurgy Honor Society), Fellow of ASM International, Fellow of Institute for the Advancement of Engineering, Research Fellow of University College, Oxford University and Honorary Alumnus, Oxford University. Gold Medal for unique or unusual metallography, International Metallographic Exhibit, Denver, CO, July 1985.[iv]
