John Dana Durand (July 24, 1913 – October 28, 1981) was an american demographer.
Durand was born July 24, 1913, in Washington, D.C.[1] He studied economics, receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University (1933) and a Doctor of Philosophy from Princeton University (1939).[2]
Durand joined the United Nations' Population Division in 1947, then served as its third director from 1953 to 1965. During his time at the UN, he organized, in collaboration with the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, the first and second World Population Conferences in Rome (1954) and Belgrade (1965). During that time, he was also the director of the Population Association of America (1961-1962).[2]
In 1965, Durand left the UN and joined the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a professor of economics and sociology, as well as director of the Population Studies Center until 1979.[2]
Durand died October 28, 1981, in Spruce Pine, North Carolina.[1]
