Rev Fr. John Hugh Diman (born John Byron Diman) was a founder of 3 schools in the United States.

John was born on May 24, 1863. He is the son of Jeremiah Lewis Diman and the grandchild of Byron Diman. An aficionado for religion and education, John would become a deacon in the Episcopal church and become the rector at St. Columba's Chapel in Middletown, Rhode Island.[1]

In 1896, Diman earned a Master of Arts from Harvard. Later that year in fall, he founded Dimans School for Small Boys on Catherine Street in Newport. By 1901, under the direction of Diman, the campus moved to its current location in Middletown. later became St. George's School[2]

In 1912, he founded the Diman Vocational School in Fall River, Massachusetts. Today, it is part of the Fall River Public Schools. During World War I, he served as a captain with the British Red Cross. After the war, he went to Rome to study theology. Then, he entered Fort Augustus Abbey, a Benedictine abbey in Scotland.[3] He took priestly vows in 1921 at Belmont Abbey, North Carolina, becoming ordained as a Benedictine.[1]

In 1924, he was sent from Augustus to found Portsmouth Abbey School with a corresponding priory.[4]

Diman advocated the importance of religion in education:[5]

"for without religion, there can be no real education. Religion as a living force in deepening and enriching personality has been almost completely diminished from schools, and with it, the most powerful instrument for the development of character."

He retired in 1942 and was named emeritus headmaster of Portsmouth in 1946.[4] He died in 1949.
