John E. Courtney, PhD

Dr. Courtney is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the American Society for Nutrition.

During his tenure, Courtney has partnered with exceptional board and committee leadership developing innovative programs in education & professional development including Nutrition[1], the world’s pre-eminent annual nutrition meeting, partnered with Editors to grow the impact of the Society’s flagship journals (the Journal of Nutrition and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition), and launched new nutrition publications including Advances in Nutrition and Current Developments in Nutrition that reach over 40 million annually in over 100 countries around the world[2]. During Courtney’s tenure ASN as achieved unprecedented level of growth with membership increasing close to 300% and ASN has become a central resource where policymakers, government funders and nutrition thought leaders get the latest information on nutrition research and practice[3].

Since 2010, Courtney also serves on the Board of Directors as Treasurer of US Pharmacopeia[4], the world's largest pharmaceutical standards setting organization (with a budget in excess of 250M annually) that seeks to improve the health of people around the world through public standards and related programs that help to ensure the quality, safety and benefit of medicines and food. During his tenure US Pharmacopeia opened its first scientific laboratory facilities and branch offices in India, China and Brazil and The Center for Pharmaceutical Advancement and Training in Ghana to help ensure that populations in these regions are receiving safe high quality medicines[5].

Prior to joining ASN in 2006, Dr. Courtney served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Clinical Research Forum and the Clinical Research Foundation which convened the nation’s top leaders in academic health centers, government and industry to share best practices and chart future directions for the clinical research enterprise. Dr. Courtney was a Chief Staff Officer and Chief Financial and Administrative Officer with the American Diabetes Association and related affiliates. Dr. Courtney was a strong advocate for expanding programs to those who suffer or are at risk of developing diabetes. Advocacy funding increased by more than 300% and research for a cure grew by more than 100% during his leadership tenure with annual grants exceeding $35 million per year. Dr Courtney led the execution of the ADA Scientific Sessions increasing this meeting into the largest annual diabetes meeting in the world with over 18,000 attendees that generated over $8 million in net income that was used to fund additional research on diabetes prevention, treatment and a cure.

Dr. Courtney also has exceptional leadership experience in the university arena where he was a leader at The American University and where he also completed his Ph.D. program. Dr. Courtney served 18 years on the faculty of The University of Maryland, University College where his classes received student evaluations in the top 10% of the Business Department in every year of his service, served as peer reviewer, mentored new faculty, and developed the curriculum for one of the first web based business and management courses offered in the United States.[6]

Dr. Courtney holds a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from The American University where his academic study included strategy development, implementation and continuous quality improvement. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Business from Hood College. He is a frequent presenter at conferences and trade meetings and has led seminars on Best Practices for Non-Profit Governance and Strategic Planning and Execution.
