John Guest

John Guest, born John Lindsay Robert Guest, 2nd December 1960, is an Australian genealogist (family history researcher), historian, and author.
He has been officially recognised for tracing his family line all the way back to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. This is unusual because it carefully proves the history of a non-royal family, using research checked by expert genealogists from the College of Arms, under the Crown's Office in London.[1]
Guest also researched a largely forgotten title called the Earldom of Oxford from 1067. His work was supported by international expert Professor Tom Licence.[2][3]
This recognition came partly from an earlier family request to officially record one of their ancestors, based on old records from the College of Arms dating back to the late 1500s. These records found the family had connections to early nobility after the Norman Conquest.[4]
In 2025, the College of Arms formally acknowledged that the Earldom of Oxford from 1067 had been created by William the Conqueror for Edgar Aetheling, but said the matter is still under review in terms of where the title may be directed.[5]
In 2000, Guest was made a Fellow of the Company Directors Association of Australia.[6][7]
In 2024, he won an award from the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies for a research project he worked on with the College of Arms. Experts described his work as a “Magnus Opus,” meaning a very important and impressive achievement.[8]
Guest is also known for writing books about the history of Australian rules football. Because of their importance to the sport’s cultural and social history, his football history books have been recognised as significant works by sports experts[9] and added by them to the important Australian Sports Book and Films List.[10] He is also ranked among the top 1% of authors on Academia.edu.[11] [12]
