Sir John Walter Brooke Halsey, 4th Baronet (born 1933) is an English clergyman and baronet who does not use his inherited title. He is now known as Brother John Halsey.[1]

Early life[edit]

The only son of Sir Thomas Halsey, 3rd Baronet and of his wife Jean Margaret Palmer Brooke, the daughter of Bertram Brooke, Halsey was educated at Eton and Magdalene College, Cambridge, graduating BA in 1957.[1] One of his great-grandfathers was Charles Brooke, the second White Rajah of Sarawak.[2]

Career[edit]

Ordained a deacon (1961) and priest of the Church of England (1962, Diocese of York), Halsey served as curate of Stockbridge from 1961 to 1965, and since then has been a clerical brother in the Community of the Transfiguration, Roslin, Midlothian.[1][3] With the Revd P. Burgess CT, Halsey is superior of the Community, which was founded in 1965 with the support of the Anglican Bishop of Edinburgh and the Roman Catholic Abbot of Nunraw. The Community is ecumenical and makes its vows according to the Cistercian rite. Its brothers work with the poor and destitute and wear a grey flannel habit with a leather belt.[4]

Halsey succeeded his father as baronet in 1970. The heir to the title is his cousin Nicholas Guy Halsey TD (born 14 June 1948).[1]
