John W. Hayden, Jr. was appointed as the 35th Police Commissioner of Metropolitan Police Department, City of St. Louis on December 28, 2017, and is St. Louis' fourth African-American police chief.[1][2][3][4]
Biography[edit]
He as born on December 4, 1962. Hayden received his Bachelor of Mathematics degree from Washington University and his master's degree in the management from Fontbonne University.[5]
He joined the St Louis Metropolitan Police Department on February 23, 1987, where he served in the Fourth District. He also was assigned to the Vice/Narcotics Division, Fourth District Detective Unit and the Police Academy and Commander of North Patrol before his appointment as Police Commissioner on December 28, 2017 at a salary of $153,000 a year.[1][5]
As Police Commissioner and Chief of Police, Hayden is responsible for planning, directing, managing and overseeing the activities and operations of the Metropolitan Police Department, including field operations, investigations, support services, and general administration. He also coordinates activities with other city departments and outside agencies.
