Template:John Henshall Photographer John Mark Henshall FRPS FRGS FBIPP MA (born 6 January 1942, Stockport Cheshire, England) is a British professional photographer, cinematographer.[1] and digital imaging authority, writer and evangelist on the art and science of photography and digital imaging as it evolves and its worldwide consequences.

John Henshall is currently (since 2015) President of the Guild of Television Camera Professionals[2] (GTC), formerly the Guild of Television Cameramen, of which he was a founder member in 1972.

He started work for BBC Television in London on 28 August 1961, specialising in cameras and lighting and working on the full range of programmes from the new Television Centre, in Shepherds Bush.

In 1976 he left the BBC to concentrate on running Telefex, the firm he set up in 1966 to market his special optical effects for television cameras. These were used in many shows at the BBC and ITV and were becoming in demand throughout Europe. He was also a part-time lecturer at West Surrey College of Art and Design (WeSCAD), which later became part of the University for the Creative Arts (UCA).

In 1978 he became the Director of Photography on many early music videos[3]. This led to him being responsible for the lighting of MTV Europe for its first ten years and work on many commercials and productions such as the popular satirical television series Spitting Image from June 1986. This show featured puppet caricatures, created by Peter Fluck[4] and Roger Law[5]

In 1980, along with former BBC colleague Bob Coles, he established Tarn Ltd, a broadcast facilities company using the new lightweight cameras and shooting ‘video the film way’.

In 1984 John Henshall was elected Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society (FRPS), later serving on its council and as chairman of its Associateship and Fellowship distinctions panel. He also registered and founded the first RPS website www.rps.org in 1996. He was also made a Fellow of the British Institute of Professional Photography (FBIPP) in 1984 and was soon elected to its council, becoming President in 1991-92.

In 1991 John Henshall founded Electronic Photo-Imaging’s EPI-centre, to impart a greater understanding of the direction in which imaging technology was moving. EPI-centre advised government bodies, law enforcement, forensic scientists, the armed forces and others.

In 1993 he began writing monthly articles on the future of digital imaging – John Henshall’s Chip Shop – for The Photographer, the monthly journal for professional photographers. It was his BBC training and working with television image capture that gave him the edge and vision for the future of photography as it evolved from film to electronic/digital imaging.

In 1993 John Henshall was invited to organise and moderate the Digital Imaging Days for the Seybold Conferences in Boston, New York and San Francisco in the USA, and in Sydney Australia, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the media.

He has also been commissioned to carry out research for the development of in-camera firmware for the Silicon Valley company, FotoNation. The software developed is imbedded in most digital cameras as part of their functionality today.

In 2009 John Henshall received a Honarary Master[6] of Arts (MA) in honoris causa from the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), in recognition of his influential research and reporting on the developments in digital photography technology.
