John J. Fitzsimmons is an American artist, author, designer, inventor, and entrepreneur. He is on more than 20 patents, and his artworks have been nationally and internationally exhibited in the Art in Embassies Program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Fitzsimmons was born in Central New York. He attended the State University of New York at New Paltz for fine arts and was later accepted to the Cooper Union. Fitzsimmons had to surrender a year that he had spent at New Paltz if he joined the Cooper Union. Considering the circumstances, he enrolled himself in the Art Academy of Cincinnati.

Career[edit]

After graduating from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Fitzsimmons hoped to get into the Whitney Museum Program, but since he was not in graduate school, his enrolment was denied. During the same year, his father bought a business in Utica, New York, and Fitzsimmons spent 13 years manufacturing products for Xerox and Kodak.[1]

Fitzsimmons launched his own business after working for his father, and he started buying and selling surplus machine tools. Later, he worked at a project engineering position at Oneida Air Systems.[2]

Art and exhibitions[edit]

After working for several businesses, Fitzsimmons re-dedicated himself to his art, and his work was included in group and solo shows. His work was included in the Art in Embassies Program which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and initiated by the POTUS John F. Kennedy.[2]

Fitzsimmons taught himself non-toxic electro-etching, and he built his own 30-inch etching press. When asked about his art, Fitzsimmons said that his art comes from the Upstate New York environment, where he grew up with cold and dark winters. He prefers heavy massed forms in his works because it modifies edges, models form and adds detail. His art avoids specific verbal narratives to invite non-verbal, open, and ambiguous narratives.[3]
