John L. Jacobs is a retired United States Marine Corps (USMC) Major and corporate executive from Santa Cruz, California. He served 22 years in the military, commanding infantry and anti-armor units during three separate combat deployments in the Iraq War. He is also known for his successful 2007 humanitarian effort to rescue and relocate his wartime Iraqi interpreter to the United States. In his civilian career, he serves as an executive in the technology and IT sectors.

Early life and education

Jacobs was raised in Santa Cruz, California. He attended Oregon State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. He later pursued graduate studies, earning a Master of Arts in Crisis, Emergency, and Disaster Management from the American Military University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the William & Mary Raymond A. Mason School of Business.

Military service

Jacobs served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 22 years, advancing to the rank of Major. During the Iraq War, he deployed three times to the Al Anbar Governorate:

  • Fallujah (2004): During his first tour, Jacobs served as a rifle platoon commander with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines (3/1). On November 9, 2004, his unit entered the historic urban combat of Operation Phantom Fury (the Second Battle of Fallujah). For leading a 90-member ground assault force through heavy close-quarters combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with a combat valor ("V" device).
  • Haditha (2005): On his second tour, he served as a Combined Anti-Armor Team (CAAT) Platoon Commander with Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines (3/1), directing mobile ground operations in the Euphrates River valley. He received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for his service during this deployment.
  • Ramadi (2009): His third tour was spent with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines (2/23), managing local stabilization, crisis response, and security recovery frameworks during the late-stage reconstruction of the provincial capital. He was awarded a second Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for these actions.

Rescue of "Falcon"

In 2007, between his active deployments, Jacobs received an urgent request for assistance from Haitham (operating under the military codename "Falcon"), an Iraqi local national who had served alongside his platoon as a combat translator. Facing retaliatory threats from insurgent groups for his cooperation with coalition forces, Falcon sought relocation. Jacobs coordinated a public advocacy, media, and fundraising campaign to navigate the federal Special Immigrant Visa bureaucracy, ultimately securing safe passage and immigration visas for Falcon and his family to relocate permanently to the United States.

Civilian career

Following his retirement from active military duty, Jacobs transitioned into the private sector, specializing in software engineering management and global operational service delivery. He spent a significant tenure at Genworth Financial, eventually serving as the Vice President of Operations, where he was responsible for global application development and project management structures overseeing 750 personnel.

He currently serves as the Chief Delivery Officer at AspenView Technology Partners, an enterprise nearshore information technology, artificial intelligence, and software engineering consulting firm.
