John Lydon
John E. Lydon
Dr John E. Lydon is a retired senior lecturer and researcher in the School of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Leeds. He is known for his work in biological applications of liquid crystals, particularly focusing on 'chromonic' phases[1][2][3]. In 2011, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Watson-Crick double helix structure for DNA, he gave a lecture for the Liquid Crystal Society's annual conference about the role that liquid crystals played in the story[4].
He contributed a chapter on chromonic liquid crystals to the Handbook of liquid crystals (Wiley-VCH, 2014)[5], putting the development of the field into a historical perspective and discussing the various characterisation techniques of chromonics.
He was an active member and some-time Secretary of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society[6][7][8][9].
Awards
In 2017, Lydon was awarded the George Gray Medal[10], the British Liquid Crystal Society's highest honour, at a ceremony in Wurzburg, Germany.
