John Madison Sr. (1630 – April 16, 1708) was an American planter and ship's carpenter in Colonial Virginia. He was the patrilineal great-great-grandfather of President James Madison.
Early life and marriage
John Madison Sr. was born in 1630 in St. Stephen's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia, the son of Capt. Isaac Madison, "the Immigrant" (1590–1634) and Mary Councilor (1598–1647). He married Marie Ambrose (1633–1715), a widow, in about 1660, with whom he had a son, John Madison Jr., who inherited his estates.
