John Madison Sr. (1630 – April 16, 1708) was an American planter and ship's carpenter in Colonial Virginia.[1] He was the patrilineal great-great-grandfather of President James Madison.
Early life and marriage[edit]
John Madison Sr. was born in 1630 in St. Stephen's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia, the son of Capt. Isaac Madison, "the Immigrant" (1590–1634) and Mary Councilor (1598–1647).[2] He married Marie Ambrose (1633–1715), a widow, in about 1660, with whom he had a son, John Madison Jr., who inherited his estates.
