John Major

Sir John Roy Major (born 29 March 1943) was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1990-1997. A member of the Conservative Party He took over from Margaret Thatcher in November 1990 and took the party into a more centrist position. In the 1992 General Election Major's Conservatives won 336 seats down from Thatchers 379 in 1987 but still a good amount. In 1997 Major lost to Labour's Tony Blair with Labour winning 418 seats and Major's Conservative's only winning 165. At the 2001 General Election Major stood down from his Huntingdon seat and retired from politics.
