John McCallum (born 05 July 1988) is a two time Professional Boxing Champion, now competing in the light heavyweight division. He resides in Edinburgh, Scotland where he was raised as a child. McCallum turned professional in 2010 with Wishaw based promoter Paul Graham...[1]. Johnboy has four British youth titles, and 13 eastern and Scottish titles in the amateurs. McCallum made his debut fight since turning professional on the 19th November 2010. He competed against tough Irishman Phil Towny winning every round [2]. [3]. This was the start of a great career for the boxer who has since gone on to win 11 out of 12 professional fights.

Amateur career

Heavily influenced by the boxing family he was born in to, McCallum started boxing at a very young age, being trained by his grandfather John McCallum (Senior). The first gym he walked into was the old Sparta Boxing gym in Leith where legends including Ken Buchanan had trained previously [4]. He was inspired by his grandfather and looked up to the success of his uncle Tommy McCallum who was a 2x Scottish professional boxing champion. He boxed out of various boxing gyms in Scotland & Ireland winning 7 Eastern district titles, 7 Scottish national titles, All Irish junior title. Furthermore, he won gold, silver & Bronze in the 4 nations tournament against the best boxers in Britain & Ireland. McCallum also achieved a gold medal in Poland and a silver medal in Tampere Finland representing Scotland on international duty. He had a total of 147 amateur bouts with 129 victories [5].

Professional career

After a successful amateur career McCallum made the decision to turn professional in 2010, signing with Prospect Promotions after a short spell training in the wild card gym in Los Angeles. Whilst in LA where he sparred with many former world champions including WBO middleweight champion Kid Chocolate (Peter Quillin) & WBA welterweight champion Paul Malignaggi and the undefeated Wale Omotoso [6]. After 18 Months under the guidance of Paul Graham McCallum racked up 3 wins from 3 contests with victories over Phil Townley, James Tucker & Iain Jackson winning all 18 rounds against the 3 tough journeyman fighters [7] [8]. Johnboy then went on to link up with Paisley Promoter Tony Linie and beat the tough 'dangerman' Simone Lucas at Meadowbank sports centre, Edinburgh in front of a sell out home crowd [9] [10].

In August 2013 McCallum signed a 3 year contract with London Based manager Steve Goodwin [11]. He then had his first fight under Goodwin in Sunderland against the tough and very capable William Warburton scoring a one sided points victory [12]. McCallum then went on to defeat polish & Baltic nations champion Sylwester Walczak in York hall, London going on to win his first title as a professional (International Masters Light Middleweight Title)[13].

McCallum then travelled back to the North East of England to beat the very experienced danger man Max Maxwell who had previously knocked out World title challenger Brian Rose [14] [15].

In October 2015 McCallum stepped up two weight divisions after a two year lay off through injury to challenge unbeaten Leon McKenzie in the York hall, London [16]. The two were competing for a British Super Middleweight title eliminator, for the right to Fight for the lord Lonsdale belt [17] [18]. After a head clash in the first round McCallum's eye started to close. Following 6 rounds of action his corner could not deal with the cut eye and the referee stopped the contest [19]. McCallum's team expected the Fight to go to the scorecards where he was 5 rounds up as the cut was caused due to a head clash. This resulted in a controversial first defeat for McCallum [20].

In March 2016 McCallum got back to winning ways beating the tough, durable Mitch Mitchell in Scotland [21]. McCallum then travelled back to the York Hall, London to settle a score this time with Leon McKenzies stablemate Dalton Miller. The fight was contested for the Super Middleweight Challenge Belt. McCallum picked up his second belt as a professional with a one sided points win after a heated build up [22].

In October 2016 McCallum was televised on Channel 5 fighting against tough Hungarian Champion Norbert Seekers in front of a sell out home crowd in Edinburgh. McCallum won every round of a scheduled 6 [23] [24]

In May 2018 McCallum returned to action after an 18 month lay off through injury to Fight the very experienced Latvian southpaw Jevgenijs Andrejevs in Glenrothes, Scotland. McCallum won every round on points 40-36[25] [26]
