Early Life[edit]

In his teens, McPhee worked as a mechanic. After unsuccessfully applying to the United States Air Force at the age of 20, he signed up to be a United States Army Ranger, before becoming a green beret.

Career[edit]

As a Delta Force operator, McPhee spent 11 years in Counter-insurgency operations, specializing as a sniper and training in ballistics, reconnaissance, marksmanship, aerial gunnery and Research and development.

He completed his first tour in El Salvador, before passing United States Army Special Forces selection and training. He was deployed to Afghanistan following the September 11 attacks, fighting in the Battle of Tora Bora[2][3] and then serving in the Iraq War.

Following his return from Iraq, he took on a role as adviser and trainer to the U.S Special Forces, as well as conducting weapons-testing for the United States Department of Defense.[4]

Post Retirement and in Media[edit]

McPhee came out of the special forces in 2011, and used his experiences in Delta Force to set up a civilian weapons and tactical training company called SOB Tactical, named after his moniker,[5] as well as setting up an extreme adventure company in collaboration with other retired special forces officers.[6] He is a National Rifle Association instructor and a range safety officer.

His website lists him as a Master Instructor in all aspects of special activities, missions and operations. With over 10 years of private special activities consulting John is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in: Special Activities, Operational Preparations, Limited Signature Operations, Reconnaissance, Singleton Operations, High Threat Dignitary Protective Services, Extreme Long Range, Designated Marksman, Advanced Precision Rifle Marksmanship, Combat Marksmanship, Live Fire CQB/CQC, Advanced Pistol Marksmanship, Advanced Carbine Marksmanship, Aerial Gunnery (Rifles, Shotguns, Aerial Personnel, and Vehicle Interdictions), Mechanical, Ballistic, and Explosive Breaching, Freefall Instructor Programs, Infiltration/Exfiltration Techniques, Ground Mobility, Unit Pre-Deployment Training, and Research and Development of: Soldier Systems, Weapons, Ammunition, Thermal and Night Optics.[7]

[11]

In 2017, he was selected to appear on American TV show "Kicking & Screaming", a reality survival series on Fox, being eliminated in episode 5. [12]

Controversy[edit]

In 2015, DC Comics announced a new graphic novel at San Diego Comic-Con, called "The Sheriff of Baghdad", by Tom King. McPhee had already applied for a trademark for the name, forcing King and DC to change the name of the novel to "The Sheriff of Babylon".[13]
