John Magaña Morton, known professionally as Dr. John Morton, is an American weight-loss surgeon, author, writer, and book editor. He currently serves as a Professor, Vice-Chief, Quality Division Chief, Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Yale School of Medicine, a Diplomate of both the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Obesity Medicine, and is certified in Medical Quality by the American College of Medical Quality. He is also the Chair, Committee for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, American College of Surgeons. He previously served as the President of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery from 2014-2015, and was a bariatric surgeon at Stanford University Medical Center and president-elect of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.[1][2]
Dr. Morton attended Tulane University, where he received both his bachelor's and Masters in Public Health, as well as his Medical Doctor Degree. He also received a Masters in Health Administration from the University of Washington.
Dr. Morton completed his residency at the University of Washington, where he received a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar Fellowship.
In 2013, Morton authored a study on the effects weight-loss surgery could have on aging. Morton completed the study at Stanford with 51 patients. Morton was looking for then lengthening of the telomeres, which has been linked to aging signs.[2] In 2016, Morton was a consultant on an article on bariatric surgery for The Associated Press.[3] While at Stamford, Morton promoted support groups for his surgical patients after going through surgery.[4]
Morton has been an editor for five different books, Quality in Obesity Treatment, Morbid Obesity: Perioperative Management, The ASMBS Textbook of Bariatric Surgery, 1st and 2nd editions and SAGES Handbook on Quality, Patient Safety and Outcomes. [1]
