History

John Paul Ataker was founded in 2012. John Paul Ataker, a namesake, was chosen for the brand to pay homage to Numan Ataker's grandfather and is also the name of Numan's son.[3]

The foundation of the company is rooted deep in the long history of the Ataker family in the fashion and textile industries in Turkey. From early childhood on, Numan was trained and seasoned at a multitude of levels, venues, and sub-sectors of garments, apparel, ready-to-wear and textile sectors, and businesses, respectively.

Having started their own workshop in 1983, the Atakers established themselves over the years as a trusted name, a reliable business partner in the Turkish and international markets, as well.

In 2012, thinking it was now time to go global, siblings Kerime and Numan Ataker created the brand, John Paul Ataker, to be headquartered in New York, USA.

The brand’s designs have been frequently worn on the red carpet and at high-profile galas and other celebrity events, such as The Academy Awards and Grammy Awards[4][5] ceremonies.

Fashion Shows

John Paul Ataker has staged numerous runway shows since its debut, exhibiting themed and highly praised collections alluring to climate change, environmental issues, pollution, and the disappearing ethnic cultures. Slow Fashion has also been one of the recurring and principal statements emphasized in John Paul Ataker's creations.

“I feel that the world’s ecosystem is being negatively impacted by the consumers’ appetite for inexpensive outfits. This mass pricing has created an industry of cheap fabrications, techniques, and dyes,” says Ataker. “We are always creating slow fashion - hand dyes, cutting, and draping- meant to survive the whims of ecstatic consumption tempests.”

The first fashion show was conducted in 2016 and was inspired by a virtual trip through faded old postcards representing the most beautiful European architectural expression.

In 2017, the John Paul Ataker Fall/Winter 2017 collection was a homage to the beauty and strength of the women of Yazidi. The skillfully crafted collection by the designer Numan Ataker, showcased his interpretation of the innate elan of the Yazidi woman had she lived in a flourishing contemporary social setting, so much unlike her own situation at present. The collection sends a warm-hearted salute to the besieged and vanishing Yazidi Civilization with special focus on the abused, victimized, and persecuted Yazidi Women.

The SS18 collection was a departure from years past in its nod towards a return to nature with an eye on sustainability. Graceful, energetic, industrious Black Sea Women were the leitmotif of this fashion show. A minimal eco-footprint, the pristine and elegant collection used low-impact dyes and fabrications with the majority of pieces comprised of unbleached, raw, and natural elements.

Ataker predominantly referenced the Black Sea Ethno-Cultural mix and specifically the province of Trabzon in Turkey’s Black Sea coastal strip, a region, which, until very recently has largely managed to remain a vernacular hub, and continues largely to be populated by fishermen, artisans, weavers, silversmiths, farmers, and harvesters choosing to live a low-impact, simple, and sustainable life during modern times.

In 2018, the Spring/Summer 2018 John Paul Ataker Fashion Show was also dedicated to the victims of the Chernobyl Nuclear Environmental calamity that wreaked havoc in the entire Black Sea region, causing grave health problems and increased cancer incidences and mortality rates.[6]
