John Rhodes Penley[1] (born May 3, 1952) is an American activist and photographer known for documenting activism and protest in New York City’s East Village[2][3] in the 1980s and 1990s[4]. He was associated with the Youth International Party. In 2011, Penley organized a drum circle near then-Mayor Bloomberg's town house[5] to protest the mayor's order to remove protesters and their property from Zuccotti Park, site of the Occupy Wall Street Protest. In January 2017, Penley organized an anti-nuclear demonstration in Washington, DC.[6] He served a year in prison in the 1980s for trespassing[7] at the Savannah River Nuclear Weapons Site, after being extradited from Nicaragua.[8] He was arrested at the Savannah River Site again in 1990 while protesting.[9] Penley, a native of Asheville, North Carolina, photographed a Ku Klux Klan rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in July 2017,[10] organized to protest the city's plan to tear down the Robert E. Lee Monument, which commemorated General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate States during the American Civil War.[11] The following month, Penley returned to Charlottesville to photograph[12] the Unite the Right rally in August 2017.[13] Penley is a Navy veteran[14] currently living in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he advocates for health services for veterans.[15][16] In the East Village, one of Penley's roommates in the 1990s was the musician Cat Power, who continued to pay her share of the rent after moving out.[17] Penley's collection of New York City's East Village and Lower East Side photographs and related papers are held in the Tamiment Library at New York University.[18]
Penley is a longtime friend of attorney and political activist Stanley Cohen, who at Penley's behest[19] tried to negotiate the release of American aid worker Peter Kassig, who was held hostage and later executed by ISIS.
