John Schindler is a former NSA intelligence analyst and counterintelligence officer (1996–2004), now blogger, author, and commentator on national security strategy topics.[1] He has served as a cryptology officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve,[2] and was formerly employed as a professor of national security affairs at the U.S. Naval War College (2005–2014), a position he resigned following a misconduct investigation by the college.[3]

Education and early career[edit]

Graduating from the University of Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in History, he received his PhD from McMaster University. He has subsequently written several books on historical and terrorism subjects.[2][4]

Academic career[edit]

Schindler was a senior fellow at the International History Institute at Boston University and chairman of the Partnership for Peace Consortium Combating Terrorist Working Group. He regularly writes for The Federalist, The National Interest, Foreign Policy, and other publications.[5][6]

Recent work[edit]

Schindler is a prolific social media user, with over 25 thousand followers on twitter, and has a national security strategy blog called 20 Committee, after the Double-Cross System. His allegations regarding foreign intelligence collusion by Edward Snowden and Glenn Greenwald, regarded by some as conspiracy theories,[7] have often been met with fierce criticism.[8][9][10] Famed on social media for his highly aggressive and pugnacious style of discourse, in March 2014 Schindler publicly alleged "defamation" by an anonymous critic who blogged screenshots of vitriol directed at Schindler's interlocutors, in many cases in response only to mild criticism or polite disagreement. The defamation claim was regarded as frivolous by legal commentators.[11] Schindler eventually apologized for his "rude and dismissive" behaviour,[12] whilst under investigation for misconduct by NWC.

In June 2014, pictures were leaked to social media of Schindler engaged in "sexting" with a woman who was not his wife.[3] Shortly thereafter, a complaint was filed with the Naval War College regarding the nude pictures. [13] A misconduct investigation was launched by the college, leading Schindler to "voluntarily resign" his academic position, "after being informed of possible outcomes of the investigation."[1][3][14][15][16]

He lives in Newport, RI.[4]
