John Harold Rutger (August 30, 1927 – March 17, 1990) was an American actor and film producer, who played major roles in several movies and TV shows.

Early life[edit]

John was born on August 30, 1927 in Bellevue, Washington to Col. Sam Rutger (1897–1965) and Carol Rutger (1901–1971). John was in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1952 when he started his acting career.

Roles in movies and TV shows[edit]

John played roles in the 1950s Popeye the Sailor Man movies, as well as ALF in 1987. He had played in multiple drama films and cartoon films.

Diagnosis and death[edit]

On December 2, 1988, It was announced by several news sources, including CBS, that Rutger was diagnosed with coronary artery disease.

On February 22, 1989, Rutger had his first heart attack, and rushed to Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was treated and kept there for 7 days.

On April 2, 1989, Rutger had a second heart attack, He was unable to breathe and was rushed to Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center once again.

His health continued to deteriorate for the next 11 months of his life.

On March 16, 1990, Rutger was reportedly sleeping when he was having severe arm pain in both of his arms, and having severe shortness of breath. He was rushed to Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was put on immediate life support. Four hours later, in the morning of March 17, 1990, Rutger was taken off life support and died at the age of 62 due to a massive heart attack triggered by coronary artery disease.
