Early life[edit]

John Scher grew up in a working class family. His father sold salt and charcoal briquettes through a small business in Irvington, near the Newark border. One of the first concerts he promoted was during his sophomore year at Long Island University, where he decided to attend a meeting of the concert committee: "The student body president told us, ‘We’ve suckered the school into giving us x amount of dollars to put on a concert. Does anybody here know how to book a show?’ I looked around the room and when I saw nobody raise a hand, I raised mine."[1] The concert was a success, and led to him working with Otto Sternberg of the Monarch Entertainment Bureau in East Orange.

Career[edit]

For nearly 18 years he worked at Capitol Theatre in Passaic, before spending five years as president of Polygram Diversified Entertainment. During this time he promoted many famous acts, including Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, and The Who.

Controversy[edit]

John Scher was one of the main promoters of Woodstock '99. During his interview for the 2022 Netflix documentary Trainwreck: Woodstock '99 he made a number of controversial comments:[2]

In reference to sexual assaults:

“There were a lot of women who voluntarily had their tops off. Then you get into a mosh pit and you crowd surf. Could somebody have touched their breasts? Yes, I’m sure they did. What could I have done about it? I’m not sure I could have done anything.”

In reference to the four reported rapes:

“Woodstock was like a small city, you know? All things considered, I’d say that there would probably be as many or more rapes in any sized city of that… but it wasn’t anything that gained enough momentum so that it caused any on-site issues, other than, of course, the women it happened to”.
