John Thain (Born 31st October 1987) is a Scottish/Filipino professional boxer.[1]. Thain turned professional in 2010 with a convincing points decision win over Kevin McCauley at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.[2]

Career[edit]

Born in Edinburgh, John attended Lochend Boxing Club where his boxing abilities were honed before turning professional.

In March 2010, he defeated Kevin McCauley 39-37 in four rounds on his debut.

In September 2010, he beat Paddy Pollock 40-36 over four rounds on the Ricky Burns undercard at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow[3]. This was Johns first fight in Scotland and attracted a massive following from his friends and family.

In Dec 2012, he faced Chris Jenkinson at Meadowbank in Edinburgh in his first home town fight[4]. John won the fight 59-55 over six rounds.

On 8 March 2014, Thain suffered his first defeat in a highly controversial loss to Ronnie Heffron at the Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool[5]. Over 10 rounds the referee scored the bout 95-96 to Heffron. Ronnie Heffron would go on to be defeated by Liam Williams in his next fight and never fight again. Thain followed this up with another defeat before taking some time out from boxing.

In November 2016 he fought Bradley Skeete for the BBBofC British Title[6]. Skeete defeated Thain by a unanimous points decision in a pulsating fight over twelve rounds.

On 13 July 2018, Thain faced Nigerian boxer Larry Ekundayo for the vacant IBF European title. He lost the bout by UD over twelve rounds[7]

In August 2019, news broke that Thain was getting back into the ring with a fight to be held in his mothers homeland, the Philippines.
