John Volpi

John Volpi is an American engineer, inventor and businessman. Throughout his career he advanced and pioneered technology in wireless communications, analytics, and guided weapons.[1][2] He currently holds more than 40 awarded patents.[3]

Early life

Volpi was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He attended the Illinois Institute of Technology and later moved to Michigan to attend graduate school at Michigan State University.[4]

Career

Volpi began his professional career at Texas Instruments (TI). While there, he initiated the use and advancement of modern radar technologies.[4] He oversaw the hardware design for long range navigation (LORAN) systems and played a vital role in making it a low-cost navigation option and expanding its uses.[2] This expansion included enabling aircraft and ships to use low-frequency radio signals to determine their location. His work with the LORAN team created a more efficient device, allowing users to cut costs and power consumption. Ultimately, this work helped lay the groundwork and usher in advances in global positioning satellite (GPS) systems and cellular technology. His work in GPS later extended to the defense sector. He was an influential figure in the decision to use GPS for missiles and other guides weapons.[1][4]

Another notable example of his early success was his work with smart phone antennas which were ultimately necessary for the implementation of 4G and 5G base stations.[2][4]

After leaving the world of large corporations, Volpi became the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for  Incucomm Inc., a business incubator based in Richardson, Texas. In this role, Volpi guided technology-focused startup companies through their launch and growth. He worked with more than 300 startups in North Texas.[1]

Lone Star Analysis, a software company in Addison, Texas, was one of the many companies born from Incucomm Inc. Volpi served as a vice president and CTO of Lone Star Analysis until his retirement at the end of 2018. He now serves on the board of directors.[4]

While at Lone Star, Volpi designed software such as AnaltyicsOS® and TruNavigator®. These analytics platforms speed development of applications to support business decisions by simulating real-world events and situations.

Awards and honors

In 2012, Volpi was awarded the Corporate CTO Award by Tech Titans, a technology association in North Texas.[4][5]

In 2018, Volpi was recognized by congressman Michael C. Burgess in the House of Representatives for the impact his career has had on the State of Texas.
