John Douglas Winer (born July 6, 1954 in New Haven, CT)[1] is an American employment litigation and personal injury attorney practicing in the Oakland, CA office of, and founding partner in, the law firm Winer, Burritt & Scott, LLP.[2],[3],[4] Over the last 40 years, Mr. Winer has represented nearly 2,500 survivors of sexual abuse and harassment, collecting in the most recent two years alone more $12 million for women sexually harassed in the workplace.[5] He is presently handling 200 cases alleging sexual abuse by clergy members,[6] along with catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases.

Education & Personal Life

John D. Winer graduated from Cheshire Academy, a selective co-educational college preparatory school located in Cheshire, Connecticut, in 1972. He then received his undergraduate degree from University of Florida in 1976, followed by his law degree from University of San Francisco and admission to the State Bar of California (both in 1979).[7],[8] Mr. Winer is married to Shannan Dugan, a criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor with the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.[9],[10],[11],[12] They have three daughters (Dolci, Haley, and Nell; ages 15, 26, and 30, respectively, as of August 4, 2020).[13]

Estate of Lewis v. City of Oakland

Case No. RG16842881 in Alameda County Superior Court. Settlement in the amount of $1.75MM over tragic events which led to the death of sixteen year old Jack Lewis on December 4, 2015 at Lakeside Park, when a large limb of an acacia tree near Fairyland broke and struck his head during his birthday celebration with friends.[14],[15],[16]
